Chips are used in almost every technology, from smartphones to spacecraft. The chip crisis, which was experienced due to the lack of semiconductor in the past, affected many companies.

However, IBM announced yesterday that they have developed a new semiconductor design together with Samsung. Allegedly, this technology is so effective that it could revolutionize the chip industry.

dreams come true

The technology called Horizontal Field Transistor Transport (VTFET) means that the semiconductors used in chips are placed horizontally instead of vertically. Thanks to this new design, more semiconductors than today’s most ‘dense’ chips will be able to fit into chips of the same size.

According to IBM’s statement, arranging the chips horizontally will not only allow more semiconductors to be placed, but also reduce energy consumption by up to 85%. In other words, the batteries of phones with chips using VTFET technology will be able to last for days or even weeks.

Crypto can change the world

According to other information in the statement, the chips using this new design will also allow mining more cryptocurrencies with less energy. This can prevent future video card crises and enable more excavation with less graphics card.

IBM and Samsung officials announced that this technology will revolutionize all devices that can connect to the Internet, and a “much smarter” future awaits us.

Although a prototype has been prepared using VTFET technology, this technology is still not ready for daily use at the moment. Officials said they want this technology to be available on all devices by 2024.
