Perhaps the most striking event in the introduction of Windows 11 was that Android applications would run on the Windows 11 operating system. For most Android users, this was good news. The dependency on Android emulators would disappear and users would be able to use these applications without the need for an additional program.

However, Microsoft announced in the Windows 11 promotion that these applications will be downloaded from the renewed Microsoft Store and Amazon’s market will be used as the source. So why use Amazon instead of Google Play Store? We will answer that in this article.

Why Amazon?

Google announced in the past weeks that it will use a new packaging system for Android applications. In the Android operating system you know, the packaging system called APK was used. However, Google announced that it will switch to the new system called “Android App Bundle”, that is, AAB, next August.

Thanks to this new system, the size of the applications will be significantly reduced and the applications will be signed privately. In this way, when a problem occurs on users’ devices, Google will be able to know on which device it is due to which application.

This is where Amazon’s app store comes to the aid of Microsoft.

Microsoft Made a Smart Move

Amazon has been using the Amazon app store for installing apps on “Kindle” devices for years. It has been in service since 2011 and contains more than 500,000 applications. This number is quite low compared to the millions of applications of the Google Play Store. But Amazon works just like Apple’s app store. Amazon carefully checks every application it adds to its market and does not add fake applications or infected applications to its system as much as possible.

Thanks to Amazon’s strict auditing policy, Microsoft does not need to set up a monitoring system for Android applications. Amazon is already doing this audit. In fact, Microsoft’s move is quite clever, as the company will thus be able to rival Apple’s App Store system with minimal effort.

Currently, the first developer version of Windows 11 is available. However, this version does not have Android app support.
