Decentralized social media app Bluesky, a direct competitor to X (formerly Twitter), announced that it has surpassed 2 million users, just two months after passing 1 million users. The company also announced that it will finally add a public web interface soon, which could help it become a more attractive destination for journalists and other users.

Bluesky reached 2 million

One of the biggest hurdles for Bluesky to reach a larger audience is people’s inability to view links to posts without logging in, so the upcoming public web interface will finally help alleviate this problem. The public interface is scheduled to be available “later this month,” according to the company’s blog post.

Bluesky is technically a decentralized platform because it’s built on the AT Protocol, but users who sign up for Bluesky (it’s still invite-only) must sign up through the company’s main bsky.social network. Despite its growth, Bluesky’s hesitancy to abandon its invitation-only status and open its network to more users has allowed other X competitors to take root. For example, last month, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the number of monthly active users of the X alternative Instagram Threads was just under 100 million. He believes it could reach one billion users in the next few years. And Threads plans to work with ActivityPub in the future.
