The Planet That Could Change the Formation Theory of Planets

Until now, the density of large gas giants was thought to be lower than that of smaller rocky planets. A newly discovered planet doesn't fit this view at all.

As exploration continues in space, the structures we encounter are often unexpected and remarkable. Although bright nebulae or newly emerging bright stars are of great interest, some new planetary discoveries are in greater focus for scientists.

One of these discoveries is the planet HD 114082 b. Scientists call this planet, which is 8 times more massive, 2 times denser than Earth, although it has close dimensions with Jupiter, “super Jupiter”.

A new perspective on the formation of planets may be needed

Located 310 million light-years from the Solar System, this planet is located in the Centaurus constellation. Orbiting a sun-like star, this planet is a fairly young planet on a cosmic scale. Super Jupiter is only 15 million years old. For comparison, Earth is 4.6 billion years old.

This planet, which astronomers managed to calculate its dimensions and mass, also managed to become the youngest planet whose size and mass measurements could be made. The results of the measurements were confusing to say the least.

According to the research carried out by Olga Zakhozhay of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy and her team, this planet is 2-3 times denser than a young gas giant. This means that gas giants may have rocky cores of unexpected size. Therefore, it is necessary to update the theories about the formation of planets.
