NASA will soon undertake an important mission and launch its telescope, which will be our new eye in space. However, the new telescope, which will be launched on December 18, has been on the agenda for a while with a completely different topic of discussion, apart from its competencies and duties.
The name of this new telescope, which will replace the Hubble Space Telescope, was determined as ‘James Webb Space Telescope’. James Webb is an administrator at NASA for many years and has achieved great success during his term. But Webb is also known for hate crimes committed during his time as director. The most prominent of these is the termination of LGBTI individuals on the grounds that they are ‘homosexual’ by being labeled in a way.
He was not asked to be named after the telescope:
NASA’s naming of the telescope after James Webb was therefore undesirable, and scientists argued that the name should be changed by drawing attention to the issue with a joint article they published. After NASA announced that it would start changing all names that are the subject of any hate speech, a decision was made on James Webb, which came to the fore again.
In a very short statement, NASA announced that the name of the telescope will remain the same. Making a statement, “We have not found any evidence at this time that warrants the renaming of the James Webb Space Telescope,” NASA did not share any information about the results of the research conducted or the details of the research.
While some scientists expressed their ‘disappointment’ after NASA’s decision, discussions on the subject continue. Some think that the name of James Webb, who led important missions such as the first Moon missions during his tenure, could be given to the telescope even if the claims in question are true.
