Users of Apple’s Mac computers say that the system keeps their microphones on even when Zoom is open in the background and not on a call. As reported by The Register, the issue occurs on MacBooks and Macs running macOS Monterrey.

The reason Zoom users discovered that the microphones remained on is because Apple displays a short visual notification to alert its users when an app or device is accessing the microphones or camera. These visual alerts appear in the Menu Bar as an orange dot when using the microphone or a green dot when using the camera.

Actually, the problem is not new. After the release of macOS Monterrey last year, Zoom users noticed the issue and took to the Zoom Community support page to raise their concerns. This prompted Zoom to release an update designed to fix the bug at the end of December.

The update release notes say that Zoom version 5.9.1 (3506) “fixes an issue with the microphone light indicator being triggered when not in a meeting on macOS Monterey”, but it seems that some users still haven’t noticed a difference after the update. .
