Bringing the mid- and mid-high-end graphics cards of the RDNA 3 architecture to users, AMD has started preparations for the RDNA 4-based RX 8000 graphics cards. Finally, in a new update to LLVM (compiler and toolchain technology), important clues about new GPUs emerged.

Radeon RX 8000 graphics cards appeared on the horizon

Details of the Radeon RX 8000 series and RDNA 4 architecture have not been announced yet. However, in a new update to LLVM (compiler and toolchain technology), the architecture’s codename and GPU model numbers were revealed.

When we look at the leaked list, the term “GFX12” indicates the next RDNA revision, gfx1200, and gfx1201 indicates separate GPU models using this architecture. Previously, Radeon RX 5700 XT, supported by Navi 10 GPU, appeared as “gfx1010”, RX 6950 XT as “gfx1030”, and RX 7900 XTX as “gfx1100”. In this context, the transition from gfx1100 to 1200 may indicate a significant change.

As you know, RDNA 3 based RX 7000 desktop graphics cards did not perform as expected compared to RDNA 2. Similarly, although ray tracing performance has improved, it still lags behind NVIDIA. As a result, we can see that the RDNA 4 architecture focuses on ray tracing and efficiency. Previous reports had stated that the series would not include any high-end graphics cards.

The main reason for this is the complex multi-chip design and the difficulties of this design. Current reports at this point are that all RDNA 4 graphics cards that will be released will be based on lower-end monolithic designs. In other words, the Chiplet design that we encounter in the Radeon RX 7900M is still not planned for the desktop.

Of course, new graphics cards are not expected to be released until the second half of next year. With this in mind, we can see AMD changing its mind. However, current information points to higher-performance mid-range GPUs.
