For the last few years, Chinese phone manufacturers have been pleasing consumers by offering high memory capacities even in cheap smartphones. This situation was essentially made possible by the overproduction of memory chips. Overproduction has driven memory prices to historic lows.

But according to Digital Chat Station, one of China’s most reliable sources, the era of cheap memory is over. The overproduction was exhausted and therefore memory prices began to rise. As a result, the price tags of upcoming Chinese smartphones will increase by 300-500 yuan ($40-70), depending on their memory capacity.

Manufacturers can apply the brakes

In addition, smartphone manufacturers may turn to more modest capacities from 16-24 GB RAM and 1 TB in order to reduce costs and keep their prices competitive. However, new smartphones with record memory capacity are still expected to be released.
