Making extremely small robots has long been possible in the science and technology community. However, for the operation of these tiny robots, a direct external control was needed from the outside. Scientists from Cornell University eliminate this requirement.
Micro robots, which have basic electronic “brains” that can act autonomously on their own, do not need external control from the outside. Previous similar robots depended on electric current or laser beams focused directly on a specific area on the robots to move.

The robots, which are between 100 and 250 micrometers (one thousandth of a millimeter – smaller than an ant head) in size, can move at a simple level in their two- or six-legged versions, while their movement speed can be accelerated by laser pulses in the four-legged “dogbot” version.
Can be used in the medical field
The CMOS circuit, called the brains of robots, contains 1000 transistors (for comparison: 76.3 billion in the GeForce RTX 4090). The photovoltaic cell on the robot provides the necessary power, while the hinged legs provide movement. Although it may be seen as a very basic and simple task, the future of micro robot technology can reach very extreme points. Microbots or micro-robots could be used for challenging surgical procedures in the future. For example, clogged veins that are difficult to reach. On the other hand, it is possible to use these products not only for health but also for environmental cleaning.
