Tesla’s largest battery supplier, CATL, introduced its new battery, which is a candidate to remove the biggest restriction of electric cars today. The battery, named “Shenxing”, can offer a range of 400 kilometers with only a 10-minute charge. At full capacity, the total range can reach up to 700 kilometers.

We will have to wait a while longer to start seeing the battery in electric cars. Gao Han, the company’s chief technology officer, shared that the battery will begin mass production at the end of 2023 and will begin to be delivered to customers in 2024.

So how does this battery offer such a high range?

The battery is a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) type battery, which is the most popular technology in the electric car industry with a share of 35% and where CATL dominates this field. According to the company’s claim, the new Shenxing battery will be the most advanced and fastest charging battery of its kind.

Together with the China-based CATL and other companies producing this type of battery, China has become the main base for the production and supply of lithium iron phosphate batteries. The battery is highly preferred by vehicle manufacturers, especially with its affordable price and chemical balance.

The technical specifications of the new battery have not been fully shared. In addition, it is not yet known whether CATL’s customers will switch directly to the new battery. Tesla started using CATL’s LFP batteries from 2021.

CATL’s batteries are used by many big giants such as BMW, Daimler AG, Hyundai, Honda, Li Auto, NIO, PSA, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo.
