Sports competitions, especially football, always manage to remain the subject of discussion in our country. The main reasons for this are the referees making wrong decisions and uncertainties arising from the unclear positions. From time to time, conflicts continue meaninglessly for a long time when there is no clear information available.
Japan-based technology giant Sony, which wants to prevent this situation, introduced its advanced ‘tracking system’, which is aimed to be used in sports competitions, with Hawk-Eye Innovations, which it incorporated in 2011, at the Technology Day event it held this year.
All data will be processed live and continuously, from the instant stance of the players to the route the ball follows/will follow:
The technology, which we can translate into Turkish as an Electronic Performance Monitoring System, will present very detailed images and data, as you can see in the photographs. Artificial intelligence will show itself in this field. The technology in question consists of three steps. We can list them as follows:
- Tracking players
- Converting the section taken into data via artificial intelligence
- Creating the image in the light of the received data
- EPTS perspective of a real football match
We can’t finish counting what this technology has to offer to the sports world. Under normal conditions, we can say that there are heat maps created according to the regions where the game is concentrated, or tactical tables created by processing images.
However, at this point, the feature that sets Sony apart will be its competence in image acquisition and processing, as well as the advantages arising from its cooperation with Hawk-Eye Innovations. As for the experience, we will have to wait until it is put into practice.
