Following the spread of rumors that Apple is developing AR/VR headsets, the first move came from its South Korean rival. According to Korean sources, Samsung rolled up its sleeves for AR glasses: It was claimed that Samsung was working on a hologram-supported metaverse device.

The increasing popularity of the Metaverse market has affected companies such as Facebook, Apple, Samsung and Microsoft. Recent reports state that Microsoft and Samsung have formed an AR glasses partnership, and that Samsung is also working on a holographic AR device.

Samsung AR glasses features

The new report from Korea IT News says Samsung is working on its own AR device, alongside a previously announced partnership with Microsoft to develop AR glasses for the metaverse. According to the report, Samsung started to discuss the release date of the AR device, which includes the “hologram technology” developed by the Advanced Technology Institute with the Exynos-based application processor.

It has been claimed that Samsung will prefer Exynos processor for AR device and Android for operating system. The company is also rumored to be working closely with DigiLens, an AR/augmented reality technology (XR) company. Samsung Electronics has reportedly completed developing a prototype and will decide on the release date.

The report states that in addition to Samsung’s own device, it has formed a joint project with Microsoft to produce AR glasses with hologram technology that will use a Qualcomm processor.

How about Apple AR glasses?

Samsung’s AR glasses move could inflame competition with Apple, which has reportedly completed performance testing for VR headset production. The Korea IT News report also provides some details about Apple VR.

According to the report, Apple VR devices will be equipped with micro OLED displays and Apple will cooperate with TSMC for VR devices. The VR headset will be powered by Apple’s self-developed M1 chip and will run on the iOS interface.

Microsoft, on the other hand, did not mention any AR plans after reports that the HoloLens 3 project was shelved, other than adopting the metaverse and insisting that the HoloLens “alive”. However, it seems intriguing that Microsoft is working with Samsung for a new AR device.
