Samsung officially announced that it has joined hands with AMD for 5G vRAN. Reflecting Samsung’s goals of helping cellular network operators build and modernize their mobile networks with optimized performance, this partnership will offer a wider range of options for high-capacity, energy-efficient and performance-oriented network systems.

5G vRAN move

Both Samsung and AMD have started to perform tests in laboratory environments using FDD bands and TDD Massive MIMO widebands. Although specific figures are not given, it is reported that these new FDD and TDD Massive MIMO bands offer high performance while significantly reducing power usage. Within the scope of this collaboration, Samsung’s vRAN software was integrated with the new AMD EPYC 8004 processors and tests were carried out. Combined with Samsung’s vRAN solutions, EPYC 8004 processors deliver high power efficiency as well as optimized cell capacity per server.

“This technical collaboration demonstrates Samsung’s commitment to delivering network flexibility and high performance for service providers by creating a larger vRAN and Open RAN ecosystem,” said Henrik Jansson, Vice President of Samsung Networks and President of SI Business Group.

The South Korean giant also said it will continue to work with the US-based chipmaker to foster innovations for next-generation networks. “By integrating our AMD EPYC processors with Samsung’s leading vRAN solution, we will provide operators with a powerful tool with the incredible energy efficiency and balanced performance required for this environment,” added Lynn Comp, Corporate Vice President, Technical Marketing, AMD Server Business.

What is vRAN?

vRAN is a virtualized radio access network. vRAN is seen as the next step in the evolution of cellular networks, particularly the advancement of 5G, helping to enhance functions that were previously hardware-focused by virtualizing them or making them software-based. Similarly, many operators are looking to move towards a software-based network to enable new services and feature enhancements, as well as to be more flexible in overall network management. vRAN moves the controller functions of today’s hardware base stations to centralized servers, offering Mobile Network Operators, or MNOs, the ability to aggregate and tune radio resources to better match user traffic.
