The inflation crisis and recession pressure seen all over the world seem to have affected computer sales as well. Shipments of x86 chips (processors used in desktop and laptop computers) have experienced the biggest drop in 28 years, according to a new study.

Computer sales see biggest drop since 1994

A new shipping report by Mercury Research revealed the state of desktop and mobile processors. The x86 chips, which experienced a sharp decline as a percentage of sales after the pandemic, fell to the lowest point in about 30 years.

According to company analyst Dean McCarron’s statement, processor shipments for both desktop and laptop have decreased significantly compared to a year ago. Computer sales, which experienced the biggest drop since 1994, will continue to decline throughout this year.

Despite the decline in shipments of x86 chips, AMD seems to be smiling. Mercury Research’s research showed that over the past three months, AMD has increased its dominance in the desktop market by 3.7 percent.

However, it is not possible to see a similar table for laptop sales. Laptop shipments have dropped, despite the high-performance Ryzen 5000 and 6000 models. AMD’s share of the server market also grew 2.4 percent compared to a year ago.

Mercury Research announced that in addition to Intel and AMD’s products, models with ARM, Snapdragon and Apple M1/M2 appeal to 9.4 percent of the market. Among these products, the most affordable Chromebooks came to the fore.
