Years ago, some smartphones had hand tracking features, although its effectiveness is questionable. Some illogical issues, such as having to turn on the screen first before you can turn on your phone using your “Hand ID”, did not allow these features to survive for a long time. Now, Realme is bringing back the hand gesture support, which seems to be much more practical, to the new phone GT5 Pro that it introduced today.

Realme GT5 Pro uses its 32-megapixel selfie camera to detect your palm print instead of using a distance measurement camera and infrared light. In the demonstration, it was demonstrated that the screen automatically wakes up when the palm moves away from the screen. However, it can be predicted that the front camera probably does not remain on all the time and works with some kind of proximity sensor (most likely a product from Elliptic Labs, which is found in many Android mobile phones).

Realme said palm unlock is faster than facial recognition, thanks in part to machine learning using more than 10,000 models. The company even claimed that this security feature passed a penetration test that included more than 10 million attacks. It’s worth noting, though, that the fingerprint reader under the screen is still there, and palm recognition is just an extra option for unlocking.

Realme GT5 Pro supports various hand gestures. For example, a pinching motion where you bring your fingers together moves you through the list of recent apps, and you can browse recent apps with a slight sweeping motion to the left or right. You can change the cursor control by lifting your index finger and trigger the “click” action by holding it on a point. Additionally, you can return to the main screen by turning your palm, trigger the “back” action by pointing your thumb to the left, or turn off the screen by moving your palm towards the screen.

The remaining features of the phone also meet the standards expected from high-end (flagship) phones. The GT5 Pro is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, a 6.78-inch curved AMOLED panel from China’s BOE (2,780 x 1,264, 144Hz, 4,500 nits), 100W fast charging (50 percent charge in 12 minutes) or 50W wireless fast It includes an impressive 5,400mAh battery that supports charging, USB-C 3.2, NFC, dual speakers and an infrared remote control. As part of its nine-layer thermal structure, Realme has also included a three-layer vapor cooling chamber on the device, which it says has the industry’s largest cooling surface area. Additionally, the device has an IP64 rating for dust and liquid protection.

As in the OnePlus 12, a 50-megapixel main camera powered by a Sony LYT-808 sensor is accompanied by an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera and the same 50-megapixel, 3x periscopic telephoto camera as in the Oppo Find X6 series.

Realme GT5 Pro is available in China for 3,298 yuan or around $460 for 12GB RAM with 256GB storage model and a maximum price of 4,198 yuan or $590 for 16GB RAM with 1TB storage model. Color options include black for the glass body and orange or gold for vegan leather options.
