In its report compiling the best technology predictions for 2024 and beyond, analyst company CCS Insight stated that smartphone manufacturers will start producing phones with “self-healing” screens within five years. On the other hand, companies have been working on self-healing smartphone screen technology for several years.

Self-healing screens

Smartphones with self-healing displays could start appearing on the market by 2028, according to analyst firm CCS Insight. According to the report, a new “nano coating” will be used for this type of screens, which reacts when the surface of the screen is scratched and comes into contact with air and fills the resulting defect. On the other hand, companies have been talking about self-healing smartphone screen technology for several years. Therefore, self-healing screens are about to cease being science fiction. Of course, the most important issue here is to set the expectations correctly.

For example, LG was promoting self-healing technology in its smartphones until 2013. If you remember, a phone called LG G Flex, which had a curved screen and a “self-healing” coating on the back cover, was released. At that time, it was not explained exactly how this technology worked.

It seems that companies will focus on this issue again. On the other hand, we are not talking about miraculous recovery of shattered screens here. All defects to be removed will consist of only minor cosmetic scratches. Several other phone manufacturers have also included self-healing materials in their smartphones. In 2017, Motorola filed a patent for a screen made of “shape memory polymer” that repairs itself when cracked. The idea was to make the cracks heal when heat was applied to the material.

However, this technology has not yet been used in a commercially successful phone. And there are several hurdles to bringing such phones to market on a mass scale. First of all, companies have to invest a lot in research and development. It is also necessary to market and sell phones in large volumes. However, seeing the breakthrough in panel technologies (foldable, rollable screens), it is thought that these can be overcome.
