Apple has released a new tool that allows developers who develop apps for the AppStore to compare their app’s metrics with similar apps. A new dashboard for benchmarks has been added to App Store Connect, a platform for developers to manage their apps on all Apple platforms, including iOS and macOS.

This feature is available as part of having a developer account, but it may not be enough to replace these apps yet, as it’s not as effective as dedicated benchmarking tools.

An update to the Apple Developer website says: “Cross-of-match benchmarks provide powerful new insights across the customer journey so you can better understand what’s working for your app and find opportunities for improvement.”

Apple says it takes into account categories, business models and download volume to reveal the most relevant competition. It also promises to maintain a certain level of privacy by using “industry-leading divergent privacy techniques” to keep the performance of competing apps private.

Developers can use the new metrics to improve features such as conversion rates, revenues, error rates, and user retention, as they form part of the broader App Store Connect environment.

There are many other ways to use the developer platform as well, including testing different elements of a product page, collecting feedback on beta releases, and providing in-app events.

While the iPhone maker seems keen to deliver useful products to developers, albeit slowly, we can’t say all is well. The company has come to the fore in the media many times over the years due to the controversial application tracking that some consumers’ data was shared despite their unwillingness.
