The year 2022 has caused serious wounds in the technology community as well as in other areas. Increasing global inflation and the risk premium have driven people away from consumer goods. In this context, the downward trend of 2022 continued in the first quarter of the year, with smartphone shipments in the US and Europe falling in the quarter.

Galaxy S23 series protected Samsung

Smartphone shipments in the US fell as much as 17 percent due to weak consumer demand and inventory (de-stocking) regulations, according to a report by Counterpoint Research. Samsung’s market shipment share in the US remained at 27 percent, while Apple’s shipment share increased from 49 percent to 53 percent. Analysts say inflation began to affect the US market in the second half of 2022, coupled with the uncertain economic outlook causing consumers to delay their new smartphone purchases.
Interestingly, the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Ultra posted double-digit shipment increases over the previous year. Another phone that performed “extraordinarily well” was the Galaxy A14 5G, which sits at the other end of the Galaxy S23’s price spectrum.

Samsung’s leadership in Europe continues

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series has been successful in the US as well as in Europe. Smartphone shipments also decreased by 23 percent in Europe compared to the previous year. It is estimated that 38 million phone shipments took place in the European market in the first quarter of the year, which is the lowest quarterly shipment since the second quarter of 2012. In terms of shipping market share, Samsung retained its lead with 34 percent, while Apple and Xiaomi took second and third place with 26 percent and 19 percent, respectively.
Once again, Samsung has come to the rescue of the Galaxy S23 series, this time in Europe. Market watchers say the company has retained its lead, largely thanks to the launch of the Galaxy S23 series, which outperformed the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S21 series in previous years.
