Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk, has publicly announced that the way the social network’s direct messages (DM) works will be improved. At the meeting with the employees, Musk gave details about the new features. The new features that Musk will bring are among the features that Twitter users have been waiting for a long time.

Video and audio chat era for Twitter

According to a recording of the meeting obtained by The Verge, at the meeting titled “Twitter 2.0” at Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters, Musk stated that DMs on the social media platform will now be end-to-end encrypted. At the same time, it was reported that encrypted video and audio calling features will be added to DMs.

“We want to ensure that users can communicate without worrying about their privacy or data breach on Twitter that could cause all of their DMs to end up on the web.”

Musk also states that users’ DMs should not be readable by company employees, and this has happened several times before. As you may remember, the event that Musk mentioned happened in 2018. It was revealed that a former employee was spying on behalf of Saudi Arabia and accessing DMs.

Musk praised Signal

Musk wants to make encryption available primarily in the vision he calls Twitter 2.0. It is also reported that during the meeting, the billionaire said, “If someone put a gun to my head, there must be a situation where I can’t look at anyone’s DMs.” Musk also praised Signal, the non-profit-run encrypted chat app, and said he met with its founder, Moxie Marlinspike.

“Ironically, Moxie Marlinspike worked at Twitter and originally wanted to make encrypted DMs a few years ago, but was turned down and then went and created Signal,” Musk said during the meeting. Frankly, Twitter DMs are rather primitive and inefficient. These innovations seem to be very valuable for the platform.
