‘Ray-Ban Stories’, which was announced in partnership with Facebook and Ray-Ban in the past weeks, was met with great interest. The future of the product, which includes very interesting features such as dual 5 Megapixel cameras integrated into the glasses, built-in microphone and headphones, seems to be in danger.

Although it is a remarkable device with the features it offers, Ray-Ban Stories brings with it many concerns. It was previously stated that the device can record videos with a resolution of 1184×1184 pixels for up to 30 seconds and take photos with a resolution of 2592×1944 pixels. So how much do all these features threaten other people’s privacy?

Why is Ray-Ban Stories in trouble?

There is a very simple privacy rule: If you want to take someone’s photo, video or audio recording, you have to get that person’s consent and be aware of it. In this sense, if you, as the person receiving the recording, do not say so, the glasses must somehow inform the other person that they are being recorded.

Ray-Ban Stories has a feature designed for this. As soon as the device switches to video recording, an LED in the upper corner starts to flash and indicates that the recording has started. So how much is enough?

This light on Ray-Ban Stories can be easily covered with a very small tape. In this way, it can be ensured that no one is aware of the footage being recorded. According to the joint statement published by the Data Protection Commission of Italy and Ireland, Facebook and Ray-Ban have not yet been able to convince themselves of the reliability of the product.

Both commissions say they are not sure how effective these LED lights will be. According to the statement made; although smartphones can record at any time, they are not as alarmingly obscure as Ray-Ban Stories. At this stage, both committees stated that they would decide after the screening.

Ray-Ban Stories

The fate of Ray-Ban Stories is unknown, but this is not the first time smart glasses have been questioned. Google Glass, which was announced by Google in 2013 and met with great interest, could not reach the end user due to its high price and allegations that it violated the privacy of his private life. The project is still used in R&D studies and various scientific researches.

So what do you guys think of Ray-Ban Stories? Do you think its use can threaten privacy? Do not forget to share your comments with us.
