Dogecoin creator Billy Markus, also known as Shibetoshi Nakamoto, joked about who wrote most of the Dogecoin code: the Bitcoin developers.

Markus also said in his statement:

“They (Bitcoin) developers) did not directly make Dogecoin, but Dogecoin is mostly Bitcoin code.”

Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus founded Dogecoin in 2013. Dogecoin is a Proof of Work cryptocurrency created as a joke on a popular meme depicting the Shiba Inu (a Japanese breed of dog).

Markus’ words came as Tesla CEO Elon Musk intensified his criticism of Dogecoin co-founder Jackson Palmer.

“Palmer always forgets to mention that he didn’t write a single line of Dogecoin code,” Musk wrote. Palmer responded with a now-deleted tweet citing his contributions with a Github page. Billy Markus, one of the co-founders, tweeted that neither he nor Palmer contributed much to the project, which should have been a joke, while trying to calm the rising emotions.

Markus humorously said:

“People after us did more in the codebase than Jackson or I did. I think I wrote 20 lines of code and copied the rest.”
