Astronomy studies have been going on at a great pace in recent years. However, according to the latest news, hackers have an eye on this too. Some of the world’s leading astronomical observatories have faced temporary closures. As a result, the world’s most advanced telescope operations were temporarily suspended due to the cyber attack.

NOIRLab took the website offline as a precaution!

The International Gemini Observatory, which has an important place in global astronomy research, was faced with major problems. Some of the world’s leading observatories have reported cyber attacks. As a result, some telescopes have ceased to be used.

The National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory (NOIRLab), a part of the US National Science Foundation, stated that the attacks affected the Gemini North Telescope in Hawaii and the Gemini South Telescope in Chile, and their operations on these telescopes were temporarily suspended.

According to the statement from NOIRLab, cybersecurity experts continue to work to make the telescopes usable. In addition, it is not yet clear where this attack originated and why.

“Like the entire astronomy community, we are disappointed that some of our telescopes are not currently observing. Fortunately, we were able to keep some telescopes online and collect data with personal workarounds.”

After all these attacks, NOIRLab took the Gemini website offline as a precaution. Also, due to security concerns, NOIRLab did not give much details about the cyber attack. Astronomical observatories have been the target of cyberattacks before.
