The asteroid 2022 SF289 is currently located approximately 600 million kilometers from Earth. This celestial body, which is approximately 180 meters tall, is in the potentially dangerous asteroid (PHA) class. This asteroid, which is about 4 times the distance from the Earth to the Sun, may pose a danger to us due to its orbit.
Potentially dangerous asteroids are defined by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory as celestial bodies that are considered large enough to survive as they pass through our planet’s atmosphere and can cause major damage in the area they fall.
However, experts state that there is no threat for now. It is emphasized that asteroids, which were previously described as potentially dangerous, entered our solar system, but left without posing any danger. Experts expect the same for the asteroid 2022 SF289.
Another important point about 2022 SF289 is that it was detected by a new algorithm called HelioLinc3D. Thanks to this algorithm, it is stated that celestial objects that may pose a danger to the Earth can be revealed by making less observations. In this way, the occurrence of overlooked hazards will be prevented.
