The autopilot feature of Tesla vehicles, which has been discussed much, has worked very well this time. A woman in Philadelphia gave birth in the front seat of the electric smart vehicle while it was in autopilot mode.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the interesting incident took place while 33-year-old Yiran Sherry and her husband Keating Sherry were taking their young three-year-old son, Rafa, to school. Sherry’s husband, who realized that they could not get to the hospital because the water came on their way and the couple got stuck in the car in the traffic that could not flow, Sherry’s husband, after adjusting the navigation of the vehicle he took on autopilot to the hospital, 20 minutes away from their location, helped his wife in the birth with one hand still on the steering wheel.

The couple considered naming their baby ‘Tess’ after Tesla

In an interview with the Inquirer, Keating Sherry stated that he squeezed his wife’s hand so much that it almost shattered it during childbirth, saying, “I was saying, ‘Yiran, okay, focus on your breath.’ This was also a recommendation to myself. I was pumping adrenaline,” he said. Yiran Sherry, who stated that the decision whether to wait to arrive at the hospital to give birth was quite challenging, stated that he kept looking at the estimated arrival times to the hospital and decided to give birth in the car after realizing that they would not be able to reach the hospital on time. Keating Sherry noted that she was able to breathe a sigh of relief only after the doctor said the baby was healthy and congratulated the couple.

Nurses who came to the car for help cut the umbilical cord of their daughter, who was born just as the couple arrived at the hospital. The couple, who stated that the nurses who came to their rooms when they went to the hospital, addressed their baby as “Tesla baby”, named the baby Maeve Lily, although they thought of naming their daughter Tess after the car manufacturer. Keating Sherry added that he is grateful to Tesla engineers for their autopilot designs.

The healthy birth of the baby is a very useful event for Tesla, which has been criticized for the safety problems created by the autopilot mode. Just this week, a Paris-based taxi company stopped the use of Tesla Model 3 vehicles after a fatal accident. Prior to that, in 2019, Tesla was sued for an accident that killed a teenager driving a Model S in Florida.
