Samsung Electronics has a battery development and production division and its name is Samsung SDI. Samsung SDI batteries are used in Samsung’s laptops, smartphones, tablets and wearable devices. Batteries of this section are also included in the electric vehicles of BMW and Fiat; It will soon be used by Hyundai and Genesis.

This company now aims to launch a completely new type of battery.

According to KED Global, Samsung SDI plans to launch solid-state batteries by 2027. The company has established a new team to commercialize its ASB (All-Solid-State Battery) technology, and this team is led by Go Joo-young, Vice President of the company’s large-scale battery business division. Additionally, the company aims to accelerate the launch by collaborating with partners and customers.

Solid-state batteries use solid materials, unlike traditional batteries that use liquid electrolyte between the anode and cathode to facilitate ion flow. This reduces the risk of fire, increases the battery’s durability and increases its energy density.

Samsung SDI aims to bring to market all-solid-state batteries with energy density of more than 900 Wh/L using a sulfide-based technology. Such batteries will likely be introduced first for electric vehicles and later for energy storage systems and electronic devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablets.
